I grew up in the US watching Bollywood movies from the 70 and 80s with my Hyderbad-Deccani parents and ‘Silsila’ was one such movie. I was very young when we watched (1981) but my mom and dad and older sisters played its songs for decades to come which would become a big part of my understanding of romantic Hindi movies. I watched this movie again last night at a theatre here in Delhi and I can’t tell you how surprised I was to know the plot of this movie! How crazy of a story. Like that song ‘Holi Hai!’, if I’d’ve known what was really going on in that song, I might not have associated it to the festival, which now I will not. The song is not what you think. And the dialogues are extremely amusing given the plot, so clever and strange, I don’t want to spoil it, so I’m restraining myself, but really, this movie is hands down a must see, especially for all of us who grew up hearing the songs without actually know what the movie is about.
